Using Map Tools

Map Tools allow you to control how you view the map (Zoom Levels, Pan), identify sites of interest, measure distances between features, define buffer zones, or print. When a tool is selected and active the tool button will have a red box around it. The following describes each Map Tool:

Toggle Overview Map The Overview map shows an overview of the entire state of Montana. The map shows a "you are here" marker for various levels of Zoom. Click this button to turn-on or off the Overview map. Click an area of interest on the overview map and the map will reorient in the map view window.
Zoom-In By default, when you first launch the map, it is fully extended and the Zoom-In tool is selected, by clicking on the center (or other area of interest) of the map brings up more detail and makes more layers available. (See Using Layers)
Zoom Out Clicking the Zoom-Out button exposes more of the map area.
Zoom to Full Extent Clicking this tool will return the map to the full state view.
Zoom to Last Full Extent An extent is the view of the map, i.e., when you first launched the application, the map was at full extent. As an example of using this tool: the use of the Zoom-In button didn't return the view expected, so to return to the previous view, click the Zoom to Last Full Extent button and the map will be returned to the last view or extent that was in the viewer. Note: using the "back" button on the browser will produce less reliable results.
Pan Selecting the Pan button and holding down the left mouse button, allows the image to be shifted from side-to-side or up and down. After the left mouse button is released, the map will refresh to the new view.
Identify Visable Features To identify a well, city, stream, section, or other layer feature of interest, click the Identify button and then click on a specific symbol of the active layer, a display box at the bottom of the map will have the name, description or links to other relevant information.
Query To be used as a quick way to access groups of sites or features, clicking the query tool provides a query wizard at the bottom of the map. To use the query tool, select the layer of interest to make active. For sample values or a selection list, click on "Get Samples". To build a specific query use the operators And, Or, Not, or parenthesis to group. Click "Add to Query String" to build the query. When the query string is built, use "Execute" to run the query; "Undo" to undo the last addition to the query string; and "Clear" to erase the whole query string.
Find Selecting this tool opens a dialog box at the bottom of the map and prompts for text search of the current active layer. For example, if Wells is the active layer and the need is locate CBM wells, type "CBM" in the critiria box and click "Find String". A listing of all CBM wells will be returned. Zoom to a specific well or feature by clicking on the "Rec" field in the table.
Measure Select Measure to find the distance either between two points or select multiple points and see the distance by total or segment. Use the "Clear Selection" button to reset the map.
Set Units Used with Measure to change units of measurement from Feet, Miles, Meters, or Kilometers.
Buffer This tool creates a shaded "buffer" zone around specific features. Use a selection tool to select a feature or multiple features of interest; then select the buffer tool. At the bottom of the map, a selection box allows the feature layer to be highlighted and a distant around the feature (use the measure tool to change measurement units) for the buffer. Click here to see an example of a one mile buffer around the Tongue River for Section 4 of T7N R47E.
Select by Rectangle The Select by Rectangle tool allows either the selection of one feature or a group of features within a rectangle. Information available on a feature is presented at the bottom of the map. Note: If more than one feature is selected a "Zoom to these Records" link is below the information grid.
Select by Line/Polygon Select by Line/Polygon allows for the selection of features by either a line or in an non-rectangular shape. Select the tool and then click on the first point, then click on a second point for a line or select a third point for a polygon. Use the button at the bottom of the map to complete the line or polygon and retrieve information related to the active layer.
Clear Selection Click to Clear selection or reset map. This is used with most tools to reset the map.
Print Selecting Print will create a printer friendly page. After clicking Print, a text entry box is available at the bottom of the map to type a custom title.
Select Sections Clicking on this tool will make Sections the active layer and allows for the selection of a single section or multiple sections for producing Project Planning and Analysis Reports..
